Doubling your conversion rate is identical to halving your cost per acquisition. CRO is the lever with the highest ROI in marketing — once you've stopped burning money on bad ads, the next 10× usually comes from the page, not the ad.
Step 0 — Have a real conversion goal
The page must have one job. "Sign up", "buy", "book", "call." If your page tries to do three things, it does none of them. Pick one and remove the rest.
The 10 highest-impact CRO fixes
1. Match the ad headline to the page H1
If the ad says "Free trial — no card required," the H1 should say the same thing. Not your tagline. Not your company name. Match. The visitor's brain confirms "yes, I'm in the right place" in 0.5 seconds.
2. Show the offer above the fold
Don't make people scroll for the value prop, the price, or the CTA. The first screen on mobile should answer: what is this, who is it for, what should I do next?
3. Strip the navigation
On a paid landing page, remove the top nav, footer links, and any other "exit." The page is a one-way street. Conversion lifts of 10–25% are common from this single change.
4. Cut the form to the bone
Every form field drops conversion. The math:
- 1 field (email): 100% baseline
- 3 fields (email, name, phone): ~70% of baseline
- 7+ fields: ~30%
Ask for the minimum to start the conversation. Get the rest later in onboarding.
5. Use social proof at decision points
Logos of customers, star ratings, testimonials, "X people signed up this week." Place them right before the CTA, not at the bottom of the page.
6. Make the CTA button impossible to miss
Big, contrasting color, action-oriented text. "Get my free demo" beats "Submit" every time. The button should pass the squint test: still visible if you blur the page.
7. Speed up the page
Each second of load time costs you ~7% of conversions. Compress images. Lazy-load below-the-fold. Use a CDN. Test with PageSpeed Insights — you want a mobile score of 80+.
8. Add a money-back / risk-reverser
"30-day money back," "Cancel anytime," "No card required." Reduces the perceived cost of saying yes. For lead-gen: "Takes 30 seconds, we'll never share your info."
9. Address the top objection in copy
Whatever stops people from converting, address it directly. If you're expensive: explain why you're worth it. If your competitor is more famous: explain what you do better.
10. Test with a 5-second test, not A/B
Before running an A/B test that needs 10,000 visitors per side: show your page to 5 strangers for 5 seconds each, then ask "what was that page about?" If they can't tell you, the page is too cluttered. Fix that first.
Mobile-specific fixes
- Tap targets at least 44×44px. Apple's accessibility guideline. Smaller buttons get mis-tapped.
- Sticky CTA at the bottom. So the button is always reachable as they scroll.
- Phone number tap-to-call. If your CTA is a call, the number must be a clickable
tel:link. - Use the right input type.
type="email"opens the email keyboard;type="tel"opens the dial pad. Tiny detail, big lift.
How SEM by CGMIMM helps
On the dashboard you'll see clicks vs conversions per platform. If clicks are healthy but conversions are flat, the problem is downstream of the ad — that's a CRO problem. The campaigns table sorts by conversion rate so you can spot the page-level issues fast.
